A speech and language assessment is the essential first step in understanding your child’s communication abilities and identifying any areas that need support. At WonderKids in Malta, our comprehensive assessments provide a clear picture of your child’s strengths and difficulties, along with specific recommendations for the way forward.
Why Is a Speech and Language Assessment Important?
Early identification of communication difficulties leads to better outcomes. A thorough assessment helps determine whether your child’s communication skills are within the expected range for their age, identify specific areas of difficulty, understand the nature and severity of any problems, inform an effective therapy plan, and provide documentation for schools or other services.
Without a proper assessment, concerns may be dismissed as something a child will grow out of, potentially delaying important support.
What Does the Assessment Involve?
Our speech and language assessments are thorough and child-friendly. The process includes several components:
- Parent interview: We begin by discussing your child’s developmental history, current concerns, and your goals. Your insights as a parent are invaluable in building a complete picture.
- Standardised testing: We use validated assessment tools to measure specific aspects of speech and language, including articulation, receptive language, expressive language, and phonological processing.
- Clinical observation: We observe your child’s communication in natural play situations, noting how they interact, express themselves, and respond to others.
- Oral motor examination: We assess the structure and function of the muscles used for speech, including lips, tongue, jaw, and palate.
For younger children, much of the assessment is conducted through play, ensuring the experience is positive and stress-free.
How We Help at WonderKids
Following the assessment, we compile our findings into a detailed written report. This report includes a summary of test results and clinical observations, an analysis of your child’s strengths and areas of difficulty, a clear diagnosis or description of the communication profile, and specific recommendations for therapy and home support.
We meet with parents to discuss the findings in person, explain what they mean in practical terms, and answer any questions. If therapy is recommended, we can begin sessions promptly thanks to our no waiting list policy.
What to Expect on Assessment Day
We understand that assessments can feel daunting for both children and parents. Our clinic in Mosta is designed to be warm and welcoming, with child-friendly therapy rooms that put children at ease. Our therapist is experienced in working with children of all ages and temperaments, and we pace the assessment to suit your child.
You are welcome to be present throughout the assessment. For some children, having a parent nearby helps them feel secure and perform at their best.
What Happens After the Assessment?
After the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive written report within two weeks. If therapy is recommended, we will discuss the suggested frequency and goals and can schedule sessions immediately. We are happy to share the report with your child’s school, paediatrician, or other professionals with your consent.
If the assessment shows that your child’s communication is developing typically, we provide reassurance and guidance on how to continue supporting their development at home.
