Understanding Your Child's Sensory Profile – A Malta Parent Guide
By Ema Bartolo ·
As an Occupational Therapist in Malta, I spend considerable time helping parents comprehend their child’s sensory profile. When explaining that a child is “sensory-seeking” or “sensory-avoiding,” parents frequently experience clarity — behaviors that seemed random suddenly become understandable. Grasping your child’s sensory profile represents one of the most empowering actions a parent can take.
What Is a Sensory Profile?
A sensory profile describes how your child’s nervous system responds to environmental sensory information. Each person maintains a distinctive sensory profile — fundamental to individual identity. For most children, sensory processing operates automatically. However, for some, it creates genuine difficulties impacting home, school, and social contexts.
The Four Sensory Processing Patterns
Dr. Winnie Dunn’s research identifies four primary patterns. Most children exhibit combinations across different sensory domains:
Sensory Seeking
High-threshold children actively pursue increased input:
- Constantly running, jumping, spinning, or climbing
- Touch everything and need tactile exploration
- Gravitate toward loud sounds and animated music
- Prefer intense, spicy, or crunchy flavors
- Display seemingly boundless energy
Sensory Avoiding
Low-threshold children become easily overwhelmed:
- Shield ears in noisy settings (school assemblies, village festivals)
- Refuse particular clothing due to unbearable tags or seams
- Resist messy activities involving paint, sand, or glue
- Experience anxiety in crowded spaces
- Prefer stability and predictability
Sensory Sensitivity
These children notice sensory input more acutely without actively resisting:
- Get easily distracted by background noise or visual clutter
- Detect minor environmental changes others overlook
- Display selective preferences regarding food and clothing
- Build toward meltdowns after prolonged exposure
Low Registration
High-threshold children who don’t actively seek input:
- Appear unaware of sensory experiences others immediately recognize
- Seem withdrawn or detached
- Don’t notice dirt on hands or face
- Miss their names being called
- Require extended processing time
How a Sensory Profile Assessment Works
At WonderKids we employ standardized assessments including comprehensive parent questionnaires, clinical observation during both organized and unstructured activities, and written reports explaining patterns and practical strategies.
Implementing Sensory Understanding at Home in Malta
- Seeking children: Incorporate movement and heavy-work activities — swimming, outdoor play, carrying groceries
- Avoiding children: Prepare for challenging situations — bring ear protection to festivals, arrive early, establish escape options
- Sensitive children: Minimize unnecessary sensory burden through soft lighting, quiet backgrounds, established routines
- Low-registering children: Supply heightened sensory input — stronger flavors, animated interactions, vivid visual elements
