Childhood anxiety is increasingly common and can significantly affect a child’s ability to participate in everyday activities, and occupational therapy offers a unique, body-based approach to support. At WonderKids in Malta, our occupational therapists help anxious children develop self-regulation skills, sensory coping strategies, and the confidence to engage in activities they find challenging.
What Does Anxiety Look Like in Children?
Anxiety in children does not always look like adult anxiety. Children may not be able to identify or articulate feelings of worry. Instead, anxiety often presents through behaviour: avoidance of specific activities, places, or situations; meltdowns over seemingly minor changes; physical complaints such as stomach aches, headaches, or nausea; difficulty separating from parents; sleep difficulties; school refusal; excessive need for reassurance; and increased rigidity around routines.
Many anxious children also show heightened sensory sensitivity, becoming more reactive to noise, touch, crowds, and unfamiliar environments when their anxiety is elevated.
How Does Anxiety Affect Daily Life?
When anxiety goes unaddressed, it can progressively narrow a child’s world. Children may stop attending activities they once enjoyed, struggle to manage school, avoid social situations, and become dependent on familiar routines and people. Academic performance, friendships, and family life can all be affected.
Anxiety also takes a physical toll, with children experiencing muscle tension, fatigue, disrupted sleep, and changes in appetite.
How We Help at WonderKids
Occupational therapy offers a complementary approach to anxiety support, focusing on the body and sensory system rather than thoughts alone. Our therapists help children develop a toolkit of practical strategies they can use in anxious moments.
Our approach includes:
- Interoceptive awareness: Teaching children to recognise their body’s early warning signs of anxiety, such as a racing heart, tight muscles, or butterflies in the stomach
- Sensory regulation strategies: Identifying the sensory inputs that help your child calm, such as deep pressure, proprioceptive activities, or rhythmic movement
- Graded exposure through play: Gradually and safely exposing children to anxiety-provoking activities in a supportive environment, building confidence step by step
- Calming toolkit development: Creating a personalised set of strategies your child can use independently, including breathing techniques, fidget tools, and movement breaks
- Daily routine support: Helping children manage anxiety around daily activities such as getting dressed, going to school, and attending social events
What to Expect from Therapy
We begin with a comprehensive assessment at our Mosta clinic, exploring how anxiety affects your child’s daily functioning and identifying sensory factors that may be contributing. We develop an individualised therapy plan in collaboration with your family.
Sessions are play-based and conducted at your child’s pace. We create a safe, predictable environment where children can gradually build confidence. We provide parents with coaching on how to support their child’s regulation at home and work with schools to ensure consistent strategies.
How Can Parents Help?
Validate your child’s feelings without reinforcing avoidance. Maintain routines and gently encourage participation in challenging activities. Model calm coping strategies. Avoid excessive reassurance, which can maintain anxiety. Our therapists provide specific guidance tailored to your child and family.
